The Alpaha River begins in the southeast corner of Dooly County, GA northeast of Cordele. It flows from there south about 200 miles until it flows into the Suwannee River at Gibson Park, FL. The flow of the Alapaha is not reliable south of Jennings, FL because at low water the flow runs underground and does not come back above ground until about a half mile from the Suwannee confluence where it dumps 6000 gallons of water per second into the Suawannee. The river will generally flow normally at mid to high water, but its condition is anecdotally known to change quickly from one day to the next. The Alapaha offers wonderful scenery which includes twenty foot limestone walls, small waterfalls flowing into the river and the occasional class II rapid.
